I am working on the horse trailer. The trailer was built in
1982.
I am going to repaint the trailer to match my
pick-up. I have started to sand off the faded gray paint and I am about
1/3rd of the way finished. I also got rid of all the high spots in the metal.
I will be re-wiring the trailer so traveling will be
trouble free. The interior
will get new lights, I am putting a battery on the trailer so we can run the
lights with the pick-up unplugged. I will be adding new LED taillights. I am
getting LED running lights. The trailer is also going to get exterior
halogen spot lights.
I will lead all the seams so I can get rid of all the
extra body trim. I have to weld new hinges and latches on some of the
doors. I am going to convert the rear doors to ramps and mount rubber on the
ramps for traction and longer life and easy horse loading. Before I do that
I have to rebuild the lower door section because it is thicker then the
upper door section. I will also have to cut some of the upper door section
off so I can make the ramps work correctly. I will also be rebuilding the
saddle rack so it will slide and stop smoothly. I found some body damage on
the trailer, one of the side support bars got hit by something and so I have
to replace that. I am sure that won't be the last of the hidden problems. I
started to remount the license plate so I can get it under lights.
I will be getting new baby moon hubcaps, adding
beauty rings and replacing the tires. I will also be replacing the bearings
and seals.
I am back from Chicago and I am hoping to
be done sanding by the end of June. At the end of June I am going to pull
the trailer up to the welder and get all the steel work done. I have a body
shop that has a tall enough paint booth so I can get a clean paint good.
On the trailers maiden
voyage last summer in 2000 miles the only troubles we had was a tire that
got a bubble on the sidewall (20 miles from reaching home
sweet home) and taillights that had to be fiddled
with every time we stopped.
